Can we live in a castle?

Updated: Sep 13, 2022

Maybe for a couple nights.

I’m currently soaking in the view of the Mosel River and the luscious greenery while typing away in the library. The church bells are ringing and the birds are chirping. It smells like it rained overnight. Much needed rain after months of no rain in this region. The air is brisk, but not too cold yet. The trees are just slowly starting to change colors. Fall is just around the corner. The slow pace of life suits me.

Yesterday we picked up our rental car and drove from Cologne to Schloss Lieser in the Mosel wine region of Germany. The beautifully renovated castle straddles vineyards on one side and the river on the other. Once checked in, we ditched our bags and we walked for miles along the scenic river to Bernkastel-Kues. I definitely have a new appreciation for rivers. On our walk back, we stopped at a local winery to taste some wine, mostly Riesling in this area. We returned to our castle later in the early evening and continued to admire the views before dinner.

Today was a rest day for us. We had breakfast at the hotel and then took advantage of the amenities here. Afterwards we ventured back to Bernkastel-Kues and wandered around the old part of town. We then made our way to Weingut Schloss Lieser where the winemaker and owner Thomas Haag served us his creations. I had a fun time picking his brain and learning about his craft. He comes from a family of winemakers that date back to the 17th century. How wild is that!

We were in Cologne prior to this. Since our time was cut short due to unforeseen circumstances, we ended up doing a lot in a short period of time. We went to multiple breweries to try Kolsch, walked around the old city walls, visited the cathedrals and met up with Jan, my colleague, for dinner.

The Cologne Cathedral was magnificent. It was massive and so ornate. Imagine the responsibility of maintaining such a structure. I can't.

We climbed to the top for a view of the city. After many winding steps and a lot of sweat, the city was beneath us. After descending, we sat around and admired the structure some more before exploring other parts of the city.

Later that evening, we met up with Jan. Jan is someone who I’ve worked with the last few years, but have never met in person. It was exciting to meet him in the flesh. We walked across the Hohenzollerbrucke and admired the city during sunset over drinks and dinner. I had a great time catching up with Jan. He dropped gold nuggets left and right about life and the city. I cannot wait until our paths cross again.
